Feedback, even positive feedback, can reduce performance.
Listening is transformational. See a Harvard Business Review paper.
Feedforward, with listening, could substitute feedback.
About me
Born in Tel Aviv in 1958 to holocaust survivors. Married with three children (one deceased) and a grandfather. Member of the Hebrew University since 1994.
Avi Kluger is a professor of Organizational Behavior at the School of Business at the Hebrew University. He was the Director of the School's Executive MBA program (2010-2014). In his capacity as a director, he placed strong emphasis on helping executives develop soft skills (e.g., negotiation, listening, self-presentation) and on fostering an integrative view of the business.

I am trying to offer alternatives to this cartoon regarding performance appraisal and feedback. Feedback is about telling someone about their current and expected behavior. This telling often backfires. One alternative to telling is listening, and asking facilitating questions, like in feedforward. I currently study the effects of listening and feedforward on performance, attitudes, and well-being. I do psychometric research of perceived-listening measurement, developed a holistic listening training program, and deliver it worldwide.
